The 70% Uganda Dark Chocolate bar from French Broad Chocolate is made with single-origin cacao from the Semuliki Forest in western Uganda — one of Africa’s most biodiverse and ancient rainforests, where cacao grows in the shade of a living ecosystem that has existed for millennia.
This cacao comes via Latitude Trading Co, a social enterprise committed to building a sustainable supply chain that directly improves the livelihoods of cacao farming families. When you buy this bar, you’re supporting that chain from forest to finished chocolate.
Part of French Broad’s Single Origin Collection — a series of bars that celebrate the extraordinary diversity of flavor expressed by cacao grown in different regions of the world. No two origins taste alike, and Uganda is proof of that.
Rich and complex 70% dark chocolate with a deep, fudgy base reminiscent of chocolate cake. Notes of dried fig add a natural sweetness and jammy depth, while a whisper of coconut rounds out the finish with a subtle tropical brightness. Smooth, layered, and deeply satisfying — a bar that rewards slow eating.
Every bar you choose supports the farming families who grow it and honors the traditional methods that make it extraordinary.
This is chocolate with purpose — sourced with intention, crafted with care, and curated for those who believe that true luxury and ethical responsibility can coexist beautifully.

French Broad Chocolate didn't start in a factory — it started on a cacao plantation in Costa Rica. Founders Dan Rattigan and Jael Skeffington left graduate school, converted a school bus to run on vegetable oil, and drove south to Puerto Viejo de Limón, where they bought an abandoned cacao farm and opened a café called Bread & Chocolate. That first chapter gave them something most chocolate makers never have: a lived understanding of cacao at the source.
Their journey eventually brought them to Asheville, North Carolina, where French Broad Chocolate was born — first out of a home kitchen, then at farmers markets, then a beloved chocolate lounge, and finally a 14,000-square-foot bean-to-bar factory near UNC Asheville capable of producing nearly 50 tons of chocolate a year.
What hasn't changed is their philosophy. French Broad defines terroir not just as soil and climate, but as a sense of place — the culture, the community, the relationships that shape what gets made and how. They source cacao from trusted farmers, share importation with fellow regional makers, and fold local Appalachian ingredients into their bars whenever possible. Cacao shell mulch goes to local gardeners. Compostables are diverted from landfill. Strawberries come from a neighboring holler; pumpkins from a local market stand.
We carry French Broad because they treat chocolate as a craft with a conscience — one that honors the land, the farmers, and the communities at every point in the chain. Every bar is a reflection of that commitment.
French Broad works directly with cacao farmers, ensuring fair relationships and exceptional raw ingredients.
From fermentation to finish, every step is deliberate — resulting in bars that are consistently extraordinary.
Every bar captures the soil, climate, and culture of its origin — flavor you can trace back to the source.
