River-Sea Chocolates
Krissee and Mariano D'Aguiar didn't set out to build a chocolate brand. They set out to build a bridge. While visiting family in Northern Brazil in 2017, they saw what cacao could do — not just as food, but as a force for connection, income, and conservation. They recognized that growing cacao doesn't require cutting down the rainforest. It leaves the plant canopy standing, the wildlife thriving, and the farming communities earning.
From that first batch, River-Sea's mission was clear: make extraordinary chocolate that makes things better. Better for the farmers who grow the cacao. Better for the rivers and forests that sustain them. Better for anyone who takes the time to taste the difference.
River-Sea sources single-origin cacao from a remarkable network of farming communities — the Chumphon Collective in Thailand, Reserva Zorzal in the Dominican Republic, Hacienda Jeanmarie in Puerto Rico, and the legendary Chuao in Venezuela, among others. Each origin is chosen for its flavor, its story, and its people.
What sets River-Sea apart goes beyond sourcing. Their first shipment of cacao arrived aboard the Tres Hombres — a wind-powered cargo vessel and the first sail cargo shipment permitted in the USA in over 100 years. Sail transport reduces carbon emissions by 99% compared to conventional cargo shipping. River-Sea is committed to funding more sail vessels and growing this movement.
Their bars have earned recognition to match: the Thailand 72% is a Good Food Awards winner, celebrated for the nuanced flavors that come from working directly with farmers who care as much about their cacao as River-Sea does about their chocolate.
We carry River-Sea because they represent what craft chocolate looks like when it's built on genuine relationships — with farmers, with ecosystems, and with the idea that a bar of chocolate can carry real meaning. Every purchase supports Amazon river cleanup through Project SUP and helps fund a more sustainable future for cacao farming communities worldwide.
